Planning a 90s Theme Party

Monday, April 9, 2007

The 90s were an era of grunge music, teen angst and generation Xers. Yet it was also a time of rapid change in the global community. Desert Storm was watched by everyone around the world. American President, Bill Clinton served two terms and got caught up in a scandal. The internet truly came into full force during the late 90s and now almost everyone has access to an internet connection.

So how can you recreate the mood of the 90s with a decade party? First, take a walk down memory lane. It’s not important to capture everything about the 90s, which could be impossible. However, you should strive to capture elements of the 90s that were important to you and your guests. Were you in high school? Or were you out in the work a day world earning a living? These two different points of view can result in two completely different 90s parties.

Ask your guests to add to the atmosphere of the 90s party by coming dressed up in what they feel is essentially 90s era clothing. If you want a more corporate themed party tell them to dress up in business type clothes. If you want the party to be a grunge nirvana tell them to come in flannel and torn jeans.

If you are still having trouble visualizing what the 90s looked like go ahead and watch some quintessential 90s movies. Look at the style of clothing, the kind of computer equipment shown, what advertisers paid to movie spots. A good series of movies to look at are anything with Paulie Shore and The Wayne’s World movies.

Junk food is an excellent way to further the grunge 90s party. Go ahead and put out crackers with spray cheese on them or order from taco bell and make that your main meal. Guests will love it.
